The Taylor-Burton Diamond

Finding the 69.42-carat diamond too big for her finger, Elizabeth Taylor asked Cartier to make her a magnificent necklace. The jewellery house's talent for showcasing the world's most beautiful stones.
The diamond is named after its famous owner and her husband, the actor Richard Burton.

Although animals symbolise the differences in rank in Chinese culture, Cartier gives them only an aesthetic aspect. The jewellery house is inspired by the phantasmagorical world of Chinese animals represented by dragons, phoenixes, chimeras, Buddhist lions and Fô dogs, which are used extensively by Cartier. Here, a wading bird, a heron or a crane, is represented. This beautiful, realistic reproduction of the bird is made of emerald and sapphire, flying in a mother-of-pearl cloudscape and an onyx sky.

For precious objects, also called objets de vertu, the house worked with goldsmiths working in gold and silver. We owe them objects such as snuff boxes, bottles, cases and other accessories.

For jewellery, the jewellers made their structures from gold, silver and platinum, often with enamel. Then the craftsman completes the piece with precious stones.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, Cartier used jade to make all kinds of jewelry and precious objects. This stone in China is considered the stone of kings. It represents preciousness, value and virtue.
The inter-war period was marked by a strong craze for jade in the West. Cartier decided to import various objects from Asia and to transform or insert them to create objects in European taste. This idea is also found in the arrival of lacquer in the West in the eighteenth century, where cabinetmakers use lacquer from Japan or China to make furniture in the taste of the time.

The crisis of the 30's marked the end of the use of fine stone as the main material. The jade is put back to small decorations to decorate sober lacquer decorations.

A unique flower brooch

In the 1930s, Indian jewellery was in fashion. To satisfy their customers, jewellers such as Cartier created pieces that could be imports, remounts or creations based on Indian elements. It is the latter case that is illustrated by the clip presented here.
Although its general appearance is reminiscent of a 1960s piece, its number indicates that it is a Cartier creation dated 1939.
On the back, a green and red enamel decoration very specific to Jaipur (India) confirms this dating. These disassembled and reused elements are called primers within the House of Cartier.
